White Awards Penny Severns Summer Reading Literacy Grants

Springfield — Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White has awarded 55 grants that will allow almost 2,000 Illinois families to participate in this summer's Penny Severns Summer Family Literacy Program.

The program, one of six literacy grant programs administered by the Secretary of State, is named in honor of the late State Senator Penny Severns (D-Decatur). It provides literacy services to parents and children during the summer when many traditional educational programs close. Students receive instruction that enhances basic reading, math, writing or language skills. Individual grants are awarded to educational agencies, including libraries, community colleges, community-based organizations, school districts and volunteer organizations.

SPRINGFIELD - Libraries in Benton, Christopher and Sesser were among 634 Illinois public libraries awarded grants by the state of Illinois, according to Secretary of State Jesse White.

“I have always believed that Illinois' public libraries are cornerstones of our communities, places where every citizen can go for information, education or entertainment,” White said. “This valuable funding my office awards each year helps ensure that our public libraries have the resources to address the needs of their patrons.”

The Benton Public Library District will receive a grand of $13,285.01, the Christopher Public Library will get $3,433.55, and the Sesser Public Library will receive $2,576.37.
