Maple Hill Trees
Mayor's Row Chamber Around Town Opera House Events City Hall History Recreation

Dear Friends,
Maple Hill Cemetery is surrounded by the bleakness of winter - a bleakness that is emphasized by the lack of trees that once made Maple Hill Cemetery one of the most beautiful final resting places in our area.

All too many of the short-lived red maples that added to the beauty of the grounds are dead, are only snags, or need to be replaced. Re-planting Maple Hill Cemetery will require the financial help of those who have family and friends buried there. To walk the rows on Memorial Day makes one realize that here lies our history. Each generation recalls someone important - our parents and those who have gone before, friends not so fortunate as to reach old age, the victims of war, and all those who are a part of our history.

The purpose of this note is to ask you singly or as a family to purchase a living remembrance of your loved ones for our Maple Hill Cemetery. We are asking for a contribution of $70.00 or any part thereof to purchase a tree or trees for re-planting our cemetery.

An agreement has been reached with Quillman Nursery to plant hard maple trees (sugar maples) and a few sawtooth oak trees to return Maple Hill Cemetery to its original beauty. These trees should last for generations to come.

An account has been established at Regions Bank (formerly Union Planters Bank) in Sesser in the name of Maple Hill Cemetery Tree Fund. This money will only be used for landscaping the grounds.

Contributions can be mailed, dropped off at the bank, the Sesser Water Department or given to Mayor Mitchell. If you itemize your tax deductions the amount should be a tax deductible. The names of those giving trees will be recorded in the Maple Hill Cemetery records.

Is it hoped that you will contribute a tree or trees and create a living memory of your loved ones.

If you would like more information you may contact Mayor Ned Mitchell at 625-3611, 625-5322 or stop in at City Hall.

PS: By word of mouth solicitation several single trees have been pledged, three have donated 5 trees, one has donated 10 trees, the city has donated 7 trees and this has created a good start for the replanting project. Maple Hill needs your help.
