Opera House Co.Under the artistic direction of David F. Wicks,
Jr., of Dahlgren, the Opera House Co. was a three year proposal that turned into
reality. Along with Opera House Co. executive producer, Aisha Mitchell, the two
began a two-month endeavor to realize a dream. With the opening of Gilbert and
Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance in May of 2007 and its successful close, a full
season was in order. David and Aisha wish to see the tiny theatre company
flourish in years to come. They feel that theatre stimulates, celebrates and
enhances the understanding of ourselves and of others through the shared
experience of live theatre. There is nothing like standing in front of a live
audience and sharing with them the hard work and love that goes into a
theatrical production. The Opera House Co. wishes to include all of the
communities in Southern Illinois, to share the theatre experience with anyone
willing to freely suspend reality for an evening, and to introduce the art of
theatre to the children in our communities. The Opera House Co. is forever
grateful to the beautiful City of Sesser for allowing them to call the Historic
Opera House home, and for giving them the financial support to keep the theatre
alive. For ticket or audition information or to volunteer please contact
Producer, Aisha Mitchell. Information on ticket prices and season subscriptions
will be made available in the near future.SESSER, IL (September 9,
2007) -- The Opera House Company's Artistic Director David Wicks, Jr. announced
today the 2007-2008 season, with three productions. Wicks has assembled a season
with a decided emphasis on the hilarious, including a wacky Latin musical
review, a classic Neil Simon romantic comedy and the area premiere of the
original version of Gilbert & Sullivan's 10th collaboration.The
2007-2008 Season is filled with laughter, romance, and classic Gilbert and
Sullivan brilliance. After a successful first season, with their production of
“Pirates of Penzance” succeeding better than either the director or first-time
producer could have dreamed, the pair are ready to expand the company’s
offerings. The new season will consist of three outstanding show selections:
opening with Low Moan Spectacular’s El Grande de Coca-Cola in November,
continuing with Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park in February, and closing in
May with a tradition they hope to continue for many years to come – an authentic
period comic opera or operetta; this season it’ll be Gilbert and Sullivan’s
Ruddygore. El Grande de Coca-Cola is a simple show that is
laugh-a-minute and ridiculously wonderful! The action takes place in a terrible
part of Trujillo, Honduras in a nightclub, which isn't so far from terrible
itself. A local impresario, Senor Don Pepe Hernandez, has announced in the local
newspapers that he is going to bring international cabaret to Trujillo.
Eventually he succeeds in convincing his brother-in-law (manager of the local
Coca-Cola bottling plant) to put up the money to rent the club, but the
“international stars” are really members of Don Pepe’s extended family. The
audience sees the cabaret within the cabaret unfold as conjuring tricks don't
work, people trip up, a blind American blues singer falls off the stage, chorus
girls collide, etc. in this very politically incorrect revue. The Opera
House Company will present the Southern Illinois premiere of El Grande de
Coca-Cola the last two weekends in October. Auditions will be held on September
13 and 14 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sesser Opera House.
